Dear Chevre
The Marshall Fire currently raging in Boulder County is absolutely heartbreaking. More than 1,600 acres and over 500 homes have already been engulfed in flames.
The communities of Superior and Louisville have already received evacuation orders, and those in the Candelas, Leyden Rock, and Whisper Creek areas are under pre-evacuation as of this writing. Hundreds of homes have been completely destroyed, and families have lost everything in an instant. The scale of loss may not be truly known for days, or possibly even weeks.
Stay updated on evacuation areas, shelter locations, road closures, verified fundraising efforts, and other important information on the Boulder Office of Emergency Management's website by clicking here. You can check on the safety of loved ones by calling 303-413-7730.
We've been in touch with our Unitarian Universalist, Protestant, Jewish, and Buddhist faith families in the affected area to make sure everyone is safe, and to find additional verified relief efforts where evacuees can shelter. In the meantime, we're asking our members of all faiths to please offer prayers for moisture, for the winds to die down, and especially for the victims affected by this disaster. We don't know yet what is needed, as everyone is in shock and in reaction mode. We'll reach out when additional information becomes available.
Wildfires of this magnitude so late in the year have renewed calls for more thoughtful climate policy. We hope this will be the case so that no Coloradan ever has to experience watching their neighborhood burn to the ground.
